Who will get these cute hats?

Newborns at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital!
The {NewNew} is kicking into high gear to prepare for the first Maker Faire in New York City to be held at the Hall of Science this Saturday and Sunday. We are collecting shirts to turn into yarn, going over our patterns and preparing kits for you to learn knitting and crocheting.(Yes YOU!) At the heart of all this work are tiny newborns joining the world at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital each day.

Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center serves the South and Central Bronx and has been providing compassionate health care to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay for over a hundred years. Bronx-Lebanon's mission is to fill the role as "Doctor to the Community." They do this by regularly providing free check-ups and screenings to schools, shelters and senior citizen centers throughout the community.  These programs and many like it bring physician and medical services directly to the community where they are need the most.

The {NewNew} wants to help in a small way by donating 100 items for the babies brought into the world at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. The 100 baby items we have pledged to create starting at the Maker Faire will be put on tiny heads and feet at the hospital's new Children’s Wing that opened in 2009. The Children's wing is providing state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient care in a family friendly environment to the children of the Bronx. But wait, there's more: We have prepared goody bags for you as a thank you for helping us with this project. So make a booty and get some booty.

With the future children of our community in mind, we look forward to hanging out with you at the Maker Faire and joining in our crafting circle at "Shirts to Hats Booth 4285". We are in Zone C right by the Bust Craftacular. Here is a map.

I hope she'll stop by our Maker Faire Booth, Shirts to Hats - Exhibit 4285, to help us make some baby hats, bibs and booties out of surplus yarn and T-shirt yarn. We have lots of goody bags for those who drop off a donation of yarn and/or help us make some baby clothes. All items will be donated to the Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Read more about our project here.

And by the way, Jou picked the prints of My Zoetrope.etsy.com as her favorite etsy shop describing them as "adorably cute and colorful."

Giveaway: Take Me To The Maker Faire!

The {NewNew} will be at the Maker Faire in Queens and we want you to come by and visit!

After five years on the West Coast, the Maker Faire finally puts down some roots in New York the weekend of September 25 at the New York Hall of Science in Corona Park. Makers from across the country will set up tents and show off their stuff to the enthusiastic New York DIY crowd. The {NewNew} will be among the exhibitors and we chose to teach, create, reclaim and donate all at the same time. We are setting up a public knitting and crocheting circle with the goal to make 100 baby items out of upcyled yarns using community support (that means YOU!). The circle will welcome all acrylic or cotton yarn donations that can be upcycled from past projects as well as gently used t-shirts which will be used to create yarn perfect for baby bibs. All donations of supplies, time and finished projects will be rewarded with a {NewNew} goodie bag full of promos that highlight its local membership. {NewNew} members will be available to teach basic knit and crochet to get you started on a series of simple projects based on patterns by longtime Maker Faire supporter Lion Brand Yarn. Not available to sit and craft? Take home the instructions and donate your finished project.

To entice you to stop by we are raffling off two tickets to the Faire, a $50 value. To enter do the following:
Leave a comment and copy and paste a link to the Etsy shop of your favorite {NewNew} Maker.

Need some inspiration? Click here for a list of the over 4000 products currently available from {NewNew} members and links to their shops.

We will randomly select a winner from the entries and announce the winner on this blog on Monday, September 13th. If you win, you must claim your tickets within 48 hours, otherwise the tickets will go to the next runner up.

Oh and if you feel like some shopping after the Maker Faire, visit our booth at the Bust Craftacular, which will take place that weekend on the same grounds.

World Maker Faire: Bring A Bootie - Get Some SWAG

Newborn Hat and Bootie Set Lion Brand Pattern 10117 AD

The Maker Faire, a family-friendly extravaganza that brings together art, craft, science, food, and engineering in shall we say "interesting" ways, will be in town in just a few weeks (Sept. 25 & 26) and The {NewNew} is in full production mode to prepare our booth.  For our project we invite you to stop by and join our retro knitting/crocheting circle. There we will make some booties and hats for newborns at Bronx Lebanon Hospital like the one I just finished. As a reward you'll get one of our fun SWAG bags filled with little surprises for you.

If you need some inspiration, we will be providing patterns by our longtime supporters Lion Brand Yarn, who are also exhibiting at the Maker Faire. Should you want to get yourself into the Maker mindset before the event, crochet or knit a baby item now and bring it to our booth in exchange for some SWAG. Use your favorite pattern or pick one of Lion Brand Yarn's many free patterns on their website. (To access their extensive pattern library you need to set up a password and provide your mailing address). If you would love to make something, but can't spare the time at the Faire, stop by anyway and pick up one of our kits. You can mail your hat to us after the event. And finally, if you wish to destash some of your yarns, we will accept non-wool, good condition balls of yarns to add to our charity stash. And yes, you'll get a SWAG bag.

The NewNew at the World Maker Faire!!

After five years on the West Coast, the Maker Faire is finally coming to New York the weekend of September 25 and The {NewNew} was accepted to participate as a Maker. The New York Hall of Science will host the Faire on the very same grounds as the 1939-40 and 1964-65 World’s Fairs on its 20 acre site inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The Faire seeks to gather thousands of Makers and aspiring makers of all ages and backgrounds.

The {NewNew} will set up a public knitting and crocheting circle where you can meet some of the makers of The {NewNew} and whip up a baby hat out of surplus yarn. There will also be demonstrations showing visitors how to turn t-shirts into t-shirt yarn that can further be worked into a baby bib. The fruits of our labor will be donated to the Bronx Lebanon Hospital. You can find out more about our project on our Maker Faire page.

Among the other attractions at the Faire will be:
