Lion Brand Yarn Studio = Education - Innovation - Inspiration

This year give someone special the gift of a brand new skill! Many of you may recognize our sponsor Lion Brand Yarn as the maker of multitudes of beautifully hued yarns, but did you know that Lion Brand has a store front right here in Manhattan? The Lion Brand Yarn Studio located at 34 West 15th St. not only offers a wonderful selection of yarns, but, in keeping with its mission of Education - Innovation - Inspiration, it has further expanded its already impressive selection of courses and master classes.

In addition to its roster of knitting and crochet classes that teach you fundamental yarn skills, the Studio also offers master classes, not For masters but With masters, and workshops in a variety of specialties. For example, you can discover the simplicity of cable knitting, or learn how to crochet motifs. For those interested in one-of-a-kind yarns, the studio offers a workshop on dyeing self-striping yarn. Non-yarncrafters seeking to take a first easy step into the yarncrafting world can try their hand at learning how to use the Martha Stewart Crafts Knit & Weave Loom Kit from Lion Brand. You can find a full listing of their schedule here.

One class in a series of the upcoming master classes should be of particular interest to online sellers. Renowned photographer, author, and knitter Franklin Habit will share some of his photography skills at the Photographing your Fiber master class on December 2. He then returns on December 4 to teach two classes; one on working with antique patterns and another on lace knitting.

If you just want to test the waters and mingle with fellow knitters and crocheters before committing to a paid workshop, check out one of the Studio's free special events and yarn crafting groups. On the first Thursday of the month drop by the open yarn crafting night, or join the amigurumi group on every third Wednesday. The next special event will be a presentation by Franklin Habit on December 1 when he presents his discoveries on Impractical Magic: Oddities and Curiosities of Nineteenth-Century Handwork.

So this year, stop by the Lion Brand Yarn Studio and pick up a new skill for yourself or a friend.

Creating at Lion Brand Yarn Studio - A Cavalcade Sponsor

We are proud to present our sponsor, the Lion Brand Yarn Studio, which incidentally is only a few blocks away from Slate the site of this year's Spring Handmade Cavalcade. With right, the Studio is proud of the strong educational component of its offerings. Recently they shared with us just a few of their many classes available.

Are you a beginner who has been yearning to learn to knit or crochet or pick it up again after years away? Located at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio classrooms at 34 West 15th Street in Manhattan, our Beginning Knitting and Beginning Crochet courses help you to build a reliable foundation of skills. We know how daunting a project can seem when you’re looping your first slipknot onto a hook or needle, so we make sure you get personalized attention by limiting these classes to 8 people. In fact, in Beginning Knitting: The Complete Course, your skill level can go from absolute beginner to confident knitter in only 6 weeks!

If you’ve got the basics down but want to go beyond the scarf, we have several options. Make an adorable, flattering summer cover-up in My First Cardigan. Master the elusive turned heel in one of our three different sock classes—for knit and crochet. Drop into Patty’s Sweater School for Knitters whenever you need the help; she can even teach you how to design your own sweater! We also offer classes in yarn working skills such as dyeing and loom weaving. We’re there for you as you grow your skills, taking you step-by-step from the basics to advanced techniques. Often, our students surprise themselves at just how quickly they learn.

In our Master Classes, you will be up close and personal with knit and crochet celebrity designers. Each Master Class is taught by a top innovator working in yarncrafting today. Often, designers and fiber artists will speak about their work at our RSVP-only events, only to teach a class a few days later.

Master Class with Adrienne Sloane: Knitting with Wire

For more personalized, one-on-one attention, we also offer private lessons for $40 per hour, and duet lessons, perfect for a parent and child or for two friends, for only $60 an hour.
Best yet, enrollment in a class gets you 10% off our already famously affordable selection of yarn. And as our graduation gift to you, you get an additional 10% off when you complete the class—so you can keep on stitching!

Go ahead and browse the extensive selection in our May class schedule—you’re sure to find the perfect fit. A new class schedule is posted on the 1st of every month, so be sure to check back for updates!

World Maker Faire: Bring A Bootie - Get Some SWAG

Newborn Hat and Bootie Set Lion Brand Pattern 10117 AD

The Maker Faire, a family-friendly extravaganza that brings together art, craft, science, food, and engineering in shall we say "interesting" ways, will be in town in just a few weeks (Sept. 25 & 26) and The {NewNew} is in full production mode to prepare our booth.  For our project we invite you to stop by and join our retro knitting/crocheting circle. There we will make some booties and hats for newborns at Bronx Lebanon Hospital like the one I just finished. As a reward you'll get one of our fun SWAG bags filled with little surprises for you.

If you need some inspiration, we will be providing patterns by our longtime supporters Lion Brand Yarn, who are also exhibiting at the Maker Faire. Should you want to get yourself into the Maker mindset before the event, crochet or knit a baby item now and bring it to our booth in exchange for some SWAG. Use your favorite pattern or pick one of Lion Brand Yarn's many free patterns on their website. (To access their extensive pattern library you need to set up a password and provide your mailing address). If you would love to make something, but can't spare the time at the Faire, stop by anyway and pick up one of our kits. You can mail your hat to us after the event. And finally, if you wish to destash some of your yarns, we will accept non-wool, good condition balls of yarns to add to our charity stash. And yes, you'll get a SWAG bag.
