A Sunday Stroll, Japan-style

On a perfect spring day in early May, women dressed in yukata strolled amid wisteria and cherry blossoms. The unmistakable sound of a pounding taiko drum could be heard in the distance. Food stalls served rice balls and dumplings. Giggling children folded paper into origami animals. Scenes typically experienced in Japan, but actually in…New York City’s Central Park!

Since 2007, Central Park has hosted Japan Day, an annual celebration of Japanese culture meant to “build bridges of cultural understanding between the people of Japan and the U.S.” (http://www.japandaynyc.org). The day traditionally kicks off with a morning Japan Run, followed by an all-day festival featuring family-friendly activity tents, free samplings of Japanese food, stage performances, and mikoshi parade.  Enjoy this year’s highlights and mark your calendars for next year’s event!

Fab Friday Etsy NY Finds

enamel ancho medallion from Wink and Flip

Summer is almost here although Mother Nature seems to be flip flopping.  Never the less it's time to get your summer wear out and if you need something new Etsy NY makers can help you.

I haven't posted a Fab Friday Finds in a while so I thought with the change of season it would be a good time to see what's new.

Posted above, Wink and Flip are ready to send you to sea.  I love this necklace! Perfect for casual or dress.  Instead of the usual blue they made it in a cherry pop red!

Great for Pride or a summer birthday, Brooklyn Owl's rainbow flag bunting is a great way to enter a party.

Bees are having a tough time lately,  we don't have enough of them and they do wonderful things for us.  Titiluli's bee cloth napkins will get your table setting buzzing.

Time to wear sleeveless tees and short shorts.  Can't dare to get a real tattoo?  The Nancy Draws Shop has solved your problem.  Being a member of the Park Slope Food Coop she thought about some of the favorite foods there.  From this inspiration she created Foodietoos.

Last but not least! Today are going to take a look at winter weddings as our series on wedding planning wraps up on the Etsy NY blog. While summer weddings are underway, we wanted to make sure that brides at any stage of planning are inspired to source parts of their big day from New York vendors on Etsy!

This 2-piece ivory lace and tulle long-sleeved gown from Leanimal in New York City is a show stopper. With a delicate overlay it's trimmed with cut-out lace detail seamed into an ivory tulle bottom. The slip-dress is fully-lined in a champagne matte silk with a slim drop-waist silhouette and straps. This dress is truly both unique and timeless.

Dashe Designs in puts a whimsical spin on bridesmaid jewelry with these sweet vintage style acorn necklaces made with cream glass pearls. The Swarovski crystal and pearls are accented by lovely antiqued silver plated brass acorn bead cap has incredible detailing. You can be these pieces are sure to be worn well after the big day!

Keeping with the vintage feel, this sunburst twig wreath with artificial white pip berries from Wild Ridge Design makes perfect wedding décor. Whether it’s hanging on a wall or placed flat in the center of the table to frame a candle centerpiece it’s simply stunning.

And while candy and matchboxes are always fun wedding favors, I love this lip balm from Elle Pea Tree for a winter wedding. It's the perfect idea during the winter months and is useful for guests of all ages long after the reception!

Market Review | Spring Crafts on Columbus

For many teamies, May means the return of outdoor market season!

May 14th and 15th marked the third and final weekend of the 37th annual Spring Crafts on Columbus. The American Arts & Crafts  Alliance outdoor market exhibits 100 artisans, including two fellow Etsy NY team members, Dora Marra and Crystalyn Kae. With a prime location on the sidewalk next to the American Natural History Museum, the art show receives a high level of foot traffic from both international tourists and Upper West Side residents. If you are debating whether to participate in the Crafts on Columbus market, allow me to dish out a few candid insights for your consideration as a two-time participant. Are you a participant of Crafts on Columbus? Would love to hear your comments about your experience and how it compares to other markets at the end of this post.

Booth Fee

This year the booth rate was $675 per weekend compared to $660 last year. This is significantly higher compared to fees in events in NJ but still cheaper than a trade show or large event such as Jazz Age Lawn Party. You definitely want to make sure you have the capacity to produce enough inventory to make your money back in sales. This may not be the best market if you are trying to get your feet wet in craft shows.

Promotion

The 30 plus year history of Crafts on Columbus definitely makes this market well-known and a well-oiled production. However, compared to other markets I have participated in, the organizers rely on older methods of marketing such as postcard mailers while their website and social media presence could use a little TLC.

Sales

My in-person sales were slower than last year, but that could be for any number of reasons. I did have many people follow up and purchase next day from the exposure and surge of traffic to my Etsy shop. I will say that for kids items, the sweet spot seemed to be in the $10-$20 range for impulse purchases. My guess is that many attendees are passing by and not intentionally shopping for higher priced items. If your key product is higher priced consider adding a lower priced item to your product mix or also having special discounted items. My booth mate, Just Blaire, had printed coupons ready to hand out to customers who purchased an item at the market. Genius customer loyalty tactic!

Weather

Crafts on Columbus is an outdoor event and has a very strict “rain or shine” policy. The rain can put a damper on sales and this weekend I was grateful I put in a few extra bucks to get the sturdy tent model with the side walls. We also experienced gusts of winds at over 20 miles per hour so mind the 20lb weight per tent leg rule.

Audience

Foot traffic is high and steady throughout the day with a good mix of families and singles. I experienced more sales on Saturday while Sunday’s brunch crowd and farmer’s market shoppers are more laid back.

Despite the weather feeling less than spring, the Crafts on Columbus market attracts tons of shoppers in a prime location that is reflected in a premium booth fee. If it’s your first time trying out craft markets, there are many alternatives that are less expensive. To get feedback about markets and events, you should talk to other Etsy NY teammates and utilize resources available to Etsy NY team members. If you're not a team member, maybe you'll want to join!

See you at the markets!

Etsy NY Travels: Arizona

Spring has taken a long time coming this year in New York, so it felt wonderful to recently take a quick trip to Arizona, warming my winter-chilled bones and recharging my mental and creative batteries.  Any vacation, even a day away from normal routine, is a wonderful way to get inspiration to make your work and art better.  I have been visiting the Southwest, and Arizona in particular, since I was little. The hills and canyons, distant mountains, and the regal, looming cacti provide a great contrast to Manhattan, and the landscape reminds me to appreciate the vastness and variety of America.  Travel, even a quick jaunt for a long weekend away, always helps me recharge my creative batteries.  I find the culture of the Southwest particularly inspiring.  The architecture, art, and even the food all remind me to add some color and spice to what I’m creating.

I was lucky enough to visit during the weekend of the Heard Museum Indian Fair.  The Heard Museum, in Phoenix, has a wonderful collection of Native American art, and during the Fair, Native American artisans display their gorgeous wares.  Micro-inlay jewelry, epic seed bead accessories, intricately woven rugs and more beautifully continue and revitalize long-held traditions.  As it is also an annual meeting time, traditional dances are performed and stories are told.  This is Cricket, and her coat was breathtaking:

I absolutely love cacti. I have a few in my apartment in New York, but they can't compare to these gorgeous purple beauties I spotted in Scottsdale.

The Phoenix Flea, a flea and craft show that's put on in Phoenix a few times a year, was also during my visit!  It was awesome to meet vendors from Arizona and the west coast, including a few I have followed on Etsy and Instagram for some time. (PS I bought this vintage dress from Etsy before my trip!)

In New York, I don't get to go horseback riding very often.  Getting to ride among the amazing saguaros was a real treat!

The Rare Earth Gallery in Cave Creek is incredible - like a museum for geode and crystal lovers.  They have geodes big enough to walk through, and rocks of the likes I've never seen.  It's such a fun experience to walk through the shop.

And that was my trip to Arizona! I love returning to these beloved places and experiences, and discovering new ones each year as well.

Adventures in the Life of a Working Artist with ADHD

So of course I've had 6 weeks to write "Adventures In The Life Of A Working Artist With ADHD," but I am starting at 11:57 AM on the day my blog post is due.  I've been up since about 6:30 AM, thinking about the blog, for about as long as my unmedicated brain can hold onto a thought.

Then I thought breakfast!  I have left over bread and cheese from Murry's Cheese Shop on Bleeker St.

To toast or not to toast?  Interesting decision, since I had nothing else to think about. I thought about the pros and cons of toasting day old bakery bread for a half hour or so.  Eating it cold from the fridge would be faster, but not as delicious.  I decided to toast.

While waiting for the toaster to ping, I catch up with "Tiny House Hunters" in Kentucky, California, Massachusetts, and Seattle, an HGTV,  program I find pertinent to my life.   Who knows when I might need to move to one of those places?  The shows roll into each other without me noticing the change.  Ah, what is that buzzing?  The toast!!

Now, NYS cheddar, butter, or sharp English cheddar?  I can't decide, I'll eat all three.

I butter the hot toast and let the butter melt, add the cheese and let it soften.  Things like this must be done right!  Its a good why to spend my morning.

Wait!  There's something I need to do!

I should call my friend Marcella, she's usually home.  Drat!  Not today.

My mom!  She's home and good for at least an hour on the phone.

"Tiny House Hunters" is now in San Diego.  I always wanted to live in LA, maybe I could get some insights that could help me decide where I might want to live, if I ever wanted to give up my rent stabilized apartment in the West Village.  I talk to my mother about maybe moving to Austin, Texas.  Then my mother actually has to go out.

My phone rings!  Thank god!  "Hello, yes this is Stacey Miller.  You want to know about the BBC Fine Art and Fine Craft Fair, sure, this is a great time to talk, what would you like to know?"  Our conversation goes a little like this:

"You have dyslexia, I have ADHD! "You think a lot of artists have these?"  "I don't know, maybe, makes sense to me."  "I've had my artists report they make between 800.00 and 4,000.00 for the day, it just depends."  "Its all about the weather"  "I cant put you on the map until you pay your booth fee and send me the receipt." Oh, she says, I didn't follow the directions."  "I understand, I usually don't either. See you at the show!"

Its 12:53 PM, I've been writing through the shows, but now "The Young and The Restless" has been on for a while.  Victor Newman is in jail, and he's very indignant about it, even though I'm pretty sure he did it, what ever it is.  Victoria is mad at Billy, he's drinking and really sorry about something or other.   Commercials over, I'll be right back.  Promise?
