Fall Football Kickoff!

Fall has arrived in New York City and so has college football! While you may typically shop Etsy for gifts, home decor and other one-of-a-kind items, you should now add tailgating to your list! No matter the team, Etsy has you covered on game day for unique handmade items!

Starting in the SEC, you really can't discuss college football without bringing the Alabama Crimson Tide into the conversation. And there is no better way to look like a true fan than to use a koozie from The Pink House Press on game day. They rule the southern collegiate koozie market and we love it.

After beating Oregon this past weekend Michigan State fans have a reason to celebrate! And if your a Spartan why not treat yourself to a set of MSU corn hole bags? These bags from All Cornhole are sure to bring your tailgate to the next level!

And of course you can't have bags without boards! These Auburn Tiger boards by JRH Cornhole are eye catching and offered in many different teams.

If you're looking to update your personal style for game day we recommend taking a look at the ladies of Charming Collect. This TCU punched stacked charm necklace is truly unique way to show your school pride.

If you make the decision to keep you tailgate indoors, these beautiful slate coasters by Points and Pints will certainly be a conversation piece. Each coaster highlights four famous moments in Oregon football history. What more could a sports buff ask for?!

Cheers to your team winning this season!

Fall Home Decorating Ideas

As fall season begins, it is always nice take time to refresh your home space and infuse it with new colors and style.

Here are 5 ideas to spruce up your home this fall:

1.  Find vintage treasures

One-of-a-kind vintage finds can add character to any room in a home.  In my own home, my favorite vintage piece is this trunk that was found by my friend near a dumpster.  He then took the time to refurbish it into this antique looking chest.  I’ve had this piece for over 10 years and will take it with me wherever I move to next!

So next time you are at the flea market, take a look around and see what catches your eye.  Other places to find great vintage finds:  antique shops, Craig’s List, eBay and ETSY.

2.  Add a chandelier

I love chandeliers!  Chandelier lighting adds a distinct and striking visual element to any room.    Chandeliers come in many different shapes, sizes and price points.

3.  Contrast textures and prints

Who says everything has to be matchy-matchy?  Be fearless and follow your instincts to mix different patterns, off-beat colors, metals and fabrics.  It’s ok to experiment and see what resonates best with your sense of style.

4.  Incorporate cubbies to help stay organized

Cubicles or accent pieces that serve as décor and storage are best, especially for small space living.  Neatly arranging stacks of books, papers, boxes or anything according to size and/or color makes a nice visual statement and helps you stay organized.

5.  Color made easy

When you stick to a neutral warm color palette as a backdrop for walls or large furnishings, then this allows you to accessorize with vibrantly colorful pillows, glamorous accent pieces and bold wall art.

MEET the ARTISAN: Cynla + GIVEAWAY

"MEET the ARTISAN" is a blog series that spotlights Etsy New York Team artisans and their craft. In this feature, we learn more about Cindy, the creator of Cynla

Q: What is Cynla? Can you briefly describe your business for us?

A: I draw and hand-letter illustrations for greeting cards and paper goods (including prints, notepads and stationery). My focus is well-designed, eco-friendly paper products that inspire happy living and de-stressing. My art is inspired by the beautiful Hudson Valley, the city streets of NYC and my experiences and travels.

Q: Some artisans develop their products to meet consumer needs, while others craft products based on things and/or experiences that inspire them. What is the inspiration behind your business?

A: Drawing relaxes me and reminds me of what is important in my life. My products are actually driven by this. Sitting down with a pen and pencil allows me to take a minute, breathe and de-stress. I want to create products that inspire people to do the same. A lot of times the ups and downs of owning a business balance this out a little, but when I go back to drawing, everything slows down a bit. I love feeling creative and inspired, and strive for this every day in my work.

Q: Oftentimes, each artisan has a different strategy and objective for their business. What are the next steps for you and your business?

A: I am working toward delving into other markets and collaborating with licensors and other companies. I would LOVE to start making fabric, wallpaper, oh and tins! I have a huge love of tins and a dream to design them. In the next couple years, I would like to make a ton of art and see them on more (eco-friendly) products. I love creating and am restructuring my business and my days at Cynla so that I have more time to do this. My strategy is to do more of what I love doing.

Q: Can you tell us some of the partners you have made? Retail stores where we can find your product?

A: I work with boutique shops (and one museum!) selling my paper goods wholesale. I'm proud to say Cynla greeting cards are in over 20 stores around the country. Recently, I collaborated with a store on a postcard promoting their terrarium-making workshop. It was a great project to work on and I would love to partner with more shops in this way.

Q: As many artisans look to grow and further develop their businesses, do you have some advice that you can share with fellow artisans?

A: Keep working at it. If you're starting to get overwhelmed, refocus. Easy to say, harder to do. Go back to drawing and creating and realize what inspired you to get you here in the first place. Get one thing done at a time and be kinder to yourself. Words I have to tell myself several times a day.

Hard to believe it is back to school time.  Instead of my normal back to school items for kids I decided to dedicate this one to the teachers.  Here are a few supplies and gifts for the teacher in your life, all from your local NYC Etsy Team.

sewing supply art work from Tamara Garvey on etsy.com

History and geography from Pepper Press NY.  Based on a c.1820’s map of Queens, superimposed over the borough’s modern-day borders.  Until 1860, Queens County included the adjacent area of Nassau County to the east. Flushing, Newtown, and Jamaica were the 3 of the original 5 towns which made up the county. These towns, along with Long Island City (which split from Newtown), and Rockaway Peninsula were consolidated into the Borough of Queens in 1897, when the area became part of New York City. Each print is individually hand printed in Brooklyn, NY.

Bugged Out tote bags are made from heavyweight 100% recycled cotton canvas, color: natural. The dimensions are approximately 14” wide and 16” high with a 6” bottom gusset.  A teacher can never have too many totes!
