Fringe it- Back to Basics- Setting the Table

Making fringe seems easier than it is.  If you would like to give a set of napkins or a scarf a casual yet sophisticated look consider fringing it.

Supplies:

fabric - scarf or napkins, yarndyed fabric is best

tweezers - used to pull the thread out if you don't have snippers

pins - long ones are best

snippers - tiny scissors used for embroidery or snipping threads close to your project

What's the best way to create fringe? Wash your fabric first.  Here I show a napkin from my own collection.  Take your square napkin and sew a 3/8" seam allowance around all 4 sides.  Cut a right angle into one of the corners.  Start pulling the threads.  Because of the grain, the thread may not pull out completely.  Don't worry.  Once the thread reaches the seam you sewed stop pulling and just snip that loose thread.  Go back to the beginning and pull the next thread.

Fringing takes a long time and is laborious. But it does give a lovely, look.  I especially like doing it on yarn dyed stripes or plaids because it accentuates the colors of the design.

DIY Craft for Chinese New Year!

This year Chinese New Year falls on February 19th.  If you are celebrating this festive and colorful occasion, here is a DIY craft idea for you to try!

Fabric Fortune Cookies

I love any craft that involves fabric, so I was especially inspired by the idea of turning scarp fabrics into keepsake fortune cookies!  I originally posted this craft idea on my blog last January.  You can read the original post, here.

The process is quite simple.  Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Colorful fabric scraps
  • Felt
  • Iron-on adhesive such as Heat-N-Bond
  • Circle template
  • Gauge wire (20 ga)
  • Fabric glue
  • Paper fortunes

Here’s how to put it together:

  1. Cut fabric, felt and adhesive into 5” squares.
  2. Following manufacturer’s direction, use the iron-on adhesive to fuse the fabric to the felt.
  3. Trace the circle template on the fabric square and cut out.
  4. Cut a piece of wire and felt slightly shorter than the width of the circle. Glue the wire to the felt piece and glue both to the center of the circle, wire side down. Let it dry.
  5. Place the paper fortune inside the circle. Fold the circle in half along the wire. Then bring the ends of the wire together to create a fortune cookie shape.

HEALTH & BEAUTY: The Benefits of Dark Chocolate

When February arrives, we think of chocolate! Maybe it’s because of Valentine’s Day? Actually…it’s probably because we’re always thinking of chocolate. But not just any type of chocolate. Dark chocolate!

Milk and white chocolate are higher in sugar and fillers, while dark chocolate typically has a higher cacao (cocoa) content that has been touted for its health benefits.

So, how can something that tastes so good be good for us? It’s all in the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant power of flavonoids. Dark chocolate with higher cacao content has been shown to have various health benefits that include the following:

  • reduce stress
  • enhance mood
  • lower cholesterol
  • increase cardiovascular blood flow

The higher cacao content does lend to a more bitter taste. Despite that, we still prefer dark chocolate with 65% to 90% cacao. The higher the better for our tastes. While tempting to start loading up on dark chocolate for its health benefits, remember to consult your medical practitioner to address any specific medical needs.

For us, we’ll continue to toast to our health with more dark chocolate. Cheers!

D.I.Y. Valentine's inpired PJ case

Valentine’s day is approaching fast! Just a few days and it’s here. I came up with a project inspired by Valentine’s but perfect to keep around all year long. It’s a PJ case, a case where you can store PJs  during the day. No more pajamas under the pillows or laying around the bedroom. It will lay fluffy on your kid’s bed waiting for bedtime to get emptied out!

You will need:

One 14” x 14” and two 14” x 8” pieces of fleece

Freezer paper

Acrylic or textile paint in color of your choice

Textile medium (if you decide to use acrylic paint)

A foam or spouncer brush

Exacto knife

Surface for mixing colors (I use the cover of a take out container)

Love heart stencil

1. PRINT THE DESIGN

Follow steps 1. though 6. used in April showers Tee project to make your stencil and print the design on the 14” x 14” piece of fleece. Note that you are NOT using the striped area in the heart stencil. Place the letters as you like. If you are using textile paint, you do not need to use the textile medium.

2. MAKE THE PJ CASE

I decided to use fleece for this case because it won’t fray and I didn’t want to finish the edges. If you decide you want to use a different kind of fabric and you want to finish the edges, you have to account for this in the measurements.

Overlap the two 14” x 8” pieces of fleece so that you have a 14” x 14” square. That will be your opening. Pin it down to keep it in place. Place the 3 layers of fabric so that the right sides are facing each other. Stitch all  around the edges using a ¼” to ½” seam allowance. Clip the corners and turn inside out. Press edges and enjoy!

TIPS:

* I recommend printing your fabric first. If you mess up, all you have to do is cut another piece of fabric as oppose to having to make a whole case again.

* You can print the design on a previously purchased pillow case and use that instead. Or print it on a Tee shirt too!

I made this one for my daughter and she loves it! You can make them as gifts for your friends' kids or your own. Have your littles give you a hand, they’ll treasure their PJ cases even more! Remember to supervise children while doing this project, specially while cutting, ironing and sewing.

Have fun and please share pictures of your projects!
