Night markets are taking over Gotham!

In two weeks, on August 3rd, the Hester Street Fair will string white lights in the trees and through the tents, dust off their liquor license, and turn the Fair into August Nights at the Hester Street Fair, a month-long Saturday night (only) market on the Lower East Side at the corners of Hester and Essex Streets. It will feature a DJ, all your favorite Hester food vendors, and booths, including a collection of vintage clothing and jewelry companies. 

Hester already runs Hester Nights at the eventi hotel in midtown, where eleven vendors provide a wide array of food and the Brighton Bar serves drinks to tired New Yorkers every Thursday evening in the summer and fall.

Night Markets were brought to New York by Aaron Broudo who founded the Brooklyn Night Bazaar. The first one, held in the area created by Urban Space, called the DeKalb Market, was such a success, it didn't take long for imitation to become the sincerest form of flattery. Subsequent BKNB markets were held in Brooklyn warehouses.

Founded with a Kickstarter fund raiser in 2011, it was conceived as "a

 summer night market, held outside on the Brooklyn waterfront. The Bazaar was inspired by the night markets across Asia.

These are fun gathering places for locals and travelers to eat, drink, shop and check out performances all in an animated setting. The Brooklyn Night Bazaar will provide a uniquely Brooklyn version of this great tradition." The thing morphed into its own Brooklyn-ized version that Aaron masterminded, with live music, vendors, sports, food and things I probably never found out about cause I was always setting up the Wink and Flip table. It took New York by storm.

Now comes the news that just last week, the Union Square Farmer's Market celebrated an important milestone birthday with their own version of a night market.

In Queens, the Astoria Market went to the dark side, and turned its beer garden location into a night market. What's next? Stay tuned. This can't be the end. "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere."

Cooldown Tip: Ok, maybe not strictly in the cooldown category, but ya gotta visit the Doughnut Plant, right around the corner on Grand Street.

As July winds down, take advantage of these lazy summer days by strolling through some of the best markets NYC has to offer. Explore an area you have never been to and perhaps fall in love with a new designer's work along the way.

The beginning of June brings with it a whole host of great handmade shopping options. From the opening of Governors Island to the delights of the Renegade Craft Fair at McCarren Park, you are sure to find a perfect handmade something to kick off the summer. Check out {NewNew}ers at the following markets:
As you already know, the {NewNew} is hosting a pop-up shop on the sandy banks of Governors Island. Over thirty vendors have their products displayed at one of the historic homes in Nolan Park. All summer, you can take the free ferry to Governors Island from Friday to Sunday and enjoy the free bike riding, concerts, and family activities while also doing some handmade shopping.

If you haven't stopped by the Hester Street Market, don't delay! Wonderful food and artisan vendors take over this historic location every weekend. {NewNew} members WishByFelicity, MShoelace, and PriavandaPatel will be there this Saturday.

This Saturday at the Brooklyn Indie Market, you'll find Wabisabi Brooklyn, Fofolle's beautiful skirts and LadyThree with revamped vintage jewelry.

South Street Seaport is not just a tourist location anymore! Even the most die hard New Yorker can find something fun and unusual in this area, especially with the advent of the Fulton Stall Market on South Street between Fulton and Beeker Streets. Spice and lavender vendors evoke a bazaar atmosphere, while local bread makers, wineries, and olive oil will keep your stomach happy. The {NewNew} continues to partner with the Fulton Stall Market to give you high quality artisan goods to complement the food aspect, so stop by on Sunday and check out WishByFelicity, LennyMud, LittleBunny, Metalicious, and ElementsForInspiredLiving.

The {NewNew} is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Fulton Stall Market on Sundays, opening this Sunday and operating weekly until October 31st. Located at former Fulton Fish Market, over two dozen food and {NewNew} artisan vendors will occupy the sixteen former fish stalls that line South Street between Fulton and Beekman Street at the South Street Seaport. Artists and Fleas is a hip, Williamsburg weekly market that showcases emerging and independent artists, designers, vintage collectors and DIYers. This Saturday you'll find LadyThree with her handmade and revamped vintage jewelry along with hand printed gift tags and cards.
