Drop Everything and Draw! Sketching a Pumpkin

Let's take a break and draw a pumpkin! What is your favorite pumpkin shape?  A tall oval or traditional round? What kind of stem do you like? Short and sturdy, or  long and twisted? Imagine your pumpkin, or go pick your own pumpkin so you have a real one to look at (highly recommended!).  No fancy supplies needed, just grab a pencil and paper. These steps illustrate the basic elements of my particular pumpkin. Feel free to go wild and add your own creativity to your sketch!

Step 1: Draw your favorite pumpkin shape: oval, round, or bumpy. Tip: be fearless!  Add a stem using only curved lines. Sketch a jagged line where it connects to the pumpkin. Make the stem short, long, bent, wide, thin, broken: any way you wish!

Step 2: Draw the contour lines. These are curved lines which follow the shape of the pumpkin. Sketch the lines spraying out from the stem down the sides of the pumpkin. Add more coming up from the bottom of the pumpkin.

Step 3: Angle your pencil and add dark outlines to edges and contour lines. Smudge the sides of the pumpkin with your finger. Add final smudges to represent surface shadows. You can erase if you oversmudge. And remember, practice makes perfect!

Protein Packed Peanut Butter Pick-Me-Up

Just in time for apple picking season! This protein packed pick-me-up is a sweet treat that will crush sugar cravings & keep you energized. The light creamy texture of the yogurt is like ice cream, but much better for you to snack on in the middle of the day.

I use peanut butter because I am an absolute peanut butter fiend! You can substitute almond butter, or sunflower seed butter, or even 'soynut' butter for a nut-free alternative.

Here is all you need to whip up this deliciousness:

  • 5oz Greek Yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey (more if you have a sweet tooth)
  • Cinnamon, Cinnamon Sugar or McCormick Chai Spice
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Fruit, cookies, anything you like snacking on!

Gather your ingredients & your mixing bowl to get started

1. Add the peanut butter, yogurt and honey to the mixing bowl

You'll need a nice sturdy spoon to mix with, that peanut butter doesn't mellow out easily!

2. Choose your spice and sprinkle it on! I usually go with McCormick Chai Spice Blend. It adds a nice little zing :-)

3. Mix mix mix! Whip the ingredients together until the peanut butter is smooth and the honey is all blended in.

5. Enjoy! I especially love dipping apple wedges into this peanutty delight; but it's just as yummy on pear slices, nilla wafers, anything you like to snack on!

Alpaca! I choose you!

Fall is here!  Each year I used to get sad about putting away my pretty summer clothes, and had to give myself a pep talk to survive the upcoming 6 months of ugliness.  In comparison with my summer closet, my winter clothes were all dark, bulky and boring; which was fine when it was keeping me warm, but sometimes they were just heavy and I was still cold!

In general I used to stay away from wool products, but I guess it was because  I always picked the cheap stuff that was scratchy and difficult to keep on.  Eventually I'd get too itchy, shed the layer that's supposed to be warm, and be all cold again.

Now you can imagine how excited I was when my friends and I were backpacking in Peru to Machu Picchu and introduced to this funny looking creature:

'The fiber of the gods' indeed! Such soft plushness and the culture being so rich in color made a good dent in my yearly clothing budget picking up sweaters, ponchos, scarves, and gloves.  Now my closet is less boring, I get to be warm, while having warm, happy Alpaca thoughts.

During the trip we also stopped by a place that taught us how things were woven and dyed, it gave us a greater appreciation towards the handmade items I picked up there as well.

The material they ground up to make the dyes.

Soaking and boiling in the colors into the fibers.

Before they started the class, I thought we were getting food. lol

Absolutely gorgeous!

Hand weaving in action.

If you guys ever find yourselves in Peru, don't come back without some alpaca goodies.  But if you don't have that chance, I was actually pretty impressed and the selection available as I browsed through my Etsy searches. Happy alpaca shopping this fall!

Etsy Trends | Astrological Inspiration

Millennial have been the cause of change in many different aspects of the world and organized religion is also one of them. As it continues to loose relevance among many consumers, the point of view that is emerging is more hollisitc, nuanaced and spiritual. Horoscopes, lunar rotations and planetary alignments are the new religion for young retail consumers looking for meaning and a deeper understanding of the self in a celestial path. This is translating into intriguing new product offerings across Etsy. Below is a wide look at some of products available for purchase.

Etsy is always a great place to find affordable artwork and this print from East Avenue Creations based in Rochester, New York shop is no different. The deep watercolor tones of this print are perfect for fall and the gold foil is right on trend in interior home décor.

This perfume from Magick Moods is a lovely representation of what each astrological sign smells like. With simple and streamlined packaging it’s an excellent gift and will look lovely displayed on any vanity.

Perhaps you’re looking for a more non-traditional way to showcase your connection to astrology? This a-line mustard color skirt by ShopNarro has an astrological print that is sure to stand out in a crowd and is a great conversation starter.

Jewelry is another great way to showcase your astrological sign. Charmingway 2 in New York City has this simple pendant necklace available in both gold and silver colored metal. The neutral stone color pairs well with almost any outfit and is another great affordable gift option.

Finally, if you love extraordinary gift wrap or dressing up for a birthday celebration I suggest taking a look at Paper Altar. Based in Troy, New York, Paper Altar has fun ribbons for many different occasions including celebrating your astrological sign.

And for all the Etsy shop owners, consider adding astrological products to your own shops! It's a growing market with a lot of growth potential!
