The Spring Handmade Cavalcade is coming up in less than 2 weeks and the team is working on final preparations... Shoppers who have come to the previous Handmade Cavalcades know that one of the perks for early shoppers, in addition to getting the be the first to see new work from local NY artsits is getting your hands on one of the Team's famous goody bags. This Cavalcade will be no exception - we will have a brand new design of {NewNew} tote bags.

Cherry Blossoms

One of the foremost indicators of spring is the cherry blossom. There is something so beautiful about this flower, and across the world there are festivals to celebrate it.

In NYC, the Brooklyn Botantical Gardens goes all out each spring to celebrate Sakura Matsuri, the Cherry Blossom Festival. This year the festival will be held on April 30 and May 1 and will feature taiko drumming, martial arts, tea ceremonies, origami workshops, and more. Prices range from $10 - $15, and I suggest you go as early as possible as it gets extremely crowded (the festival opens at 10am).

If you're not crazy about crowds, a wonderful alternative is the Cherry Walk in Riverside Park, Manhattan. This walkway extends from 100th Street to 125th Street along the Hudson River. Be aware that there is no exit along this promenade, so either be prepared to walk the entire way or backtrack when you've gotten your fill. Another stretch of Riverside Park between 90th and 96th Street is also lined with cherry trees. These trees were part of the original gift of 3,020 cherry blossom trees given by Japan to America in 1912 (most of which line the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C.).

Cherry Blossoms have inspired poetry, paintings, and other art forms throughout history. For the artisans of the {NewNew}, the cherry blossom is reinvented in a modern take - and the results are beautiful.

See you at the cherry blossom trees!

Spring in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Although sakura matsui has just passed, it is not too late to head to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to revel in the cherry blossoms.

And if cherry blossoms aren't your particular nature thing, there are dozens of other springtime flowers and plants to satisfy all your springtime outdoor needs, including crabapple:

Azaleas:

Dogwoods:

The garden is indeed a lovely place to spend a morning. Bring a book, or your knitting, or simply enjoy sitting and listening to the birds. The smell of the hyacinth will sustain you through the rest of your day.

A Thrifty Way to Spend the Afternoon

With the recession looming over our heads, my husband and I have been doing our best to have fun without breaking our budget. Now is the perfect time to go out and enjoy Spring; but how do we do that without spending money? Following Nordea's post from last week, we decided to follow suit and dug out our own rusty rollerblades. With a 50lb dog in tow, we bladed while our dog Samantha "Sam", ran alongside us on a trail not too far away from our home. It's been a year or more since I've worn my rollerblades but luckily within a few minutes, I got the swing of things and we were off.

Sadly, we don't take Sam out too often. She was tired and beat in no time.

A tired dog is a happy dog!
I'm so glad the warm weather afforded us such a wonderful memory! Not only did we all get much needed exercise, we were able to enjoy an afternoon out without spending any money. What fun activities have you been doing that don't break the budget? Please share!
