NYHC: Tell us about what you make.

Soleil Carlos: I turn clay into playful, functional, decorative pieces.

NYHC: Where do you live?

SC: I live, love, and create in Brooklyn.

NYHC: What is unique or different about your process and/or designs?

SC: I create eclectic and functional pieces that are inspired and influenced by experiences that have a narrative behind them.

NYHC: Do you have any favorite pieces? What makes them special to you?

SC: I try not to play favorites with my work, I put in the same love and work in every piece. They’re special to me because I get to create functional pieces out of mud that holds a story, brightens up a room, and is meant to last generations.

NYHC: What is your favorite tool or supply?

SC: Both my muddy hands and clay.

NYHC: Is there a new piece/opportunity/change that you're excited about?

SC: I'm currently making versatile incense/oil burner holders and using a different type of clay. Also, working on a web shop update and restock in the next month or two.

NYHC: What advice or tips can you share with other makers?

SC: Don't stop creating! When things start feeling like a routine, take a break. Create something for yourself, and get reminded why you love doing what you're doing.

NYHC: Share an important lesson you've learned from running your business.

SC: Always make extra. Double-check everything.
