Meet the Member: Dina Lerman

by Jennifer Velasquez

To kickoff our Meet the Member series in May is Dina Lerman of Bugged Out. We chatted with team member Dina about her whimsical, “line of happy for the little ones.” Find out how she uses Bugged Out to do good and her advice for fellow makers!

Dina Lerman: Bugged Out is a line of my hand screen printed whimsical bug, fruit, veggie and critter designs on organic baby and kids clothing, recycled cotton canvas tote bags, printed art, note cards and other accessories.

NYHC: What is unique or different about your process and/or designs?

DL: We are a husband and wife team. I design everything and my husband, Gerd, screen prints all our products by hand in our Bugged Out studio. Since the conception of Bugged Out we chose to support a very special cause, Multiple Sclerosis research. I have MS and this cause is very close to our hearts.

NYHC: Do you have any favorite pieces?

DL: I do. I am partial to my caterpillar and peas design. Gerd love the bumble bee and corn! We both love their happy expressions and the custom green and yellow colors I chose! The caterpillar was my first Bugged Out design and was first introduced for Bugged Out Team t-shirts at the MS Walk in 1999.

NYHC: What is your favorite tool or supply?

DL: Our screen printing equipment! It helps us create the Bugged Out magic!

NYHC: Is there a new piece/opportunity/change that you're excited about?

DL: My New York don't bug me designs (bat, bedbug, cockroach, mosquito, pigeon, raccoon, rat and squirrel) and my very newest design, the Bugged Out avocado! It first came out late last year at our Bryant Park holiday shop and instantly became one of our top selling designs!

NYHC: What advice or tips can you share with other makers?

DL: Don't be afraid to change professions if it means pursuing something you're passionate about.
