Happy New Year
Glücksschweine aka lucky pigs are a traditional gift in Germany to wish someone luck in the New Year. I was able to dig up two explanations for this custom:
- In the middle ages the loser of a competitive sporting event would take home a pig as a consolation prize
- Pork was a traditional New Year's dish and those people who could afford such expensive meat were considered lucky
