Summer Hues - Peaches

Summer is here.  If you can't tell by the temperature, take a look around.  One of the best things about summer is the refreshing, vibrant colors everybody wears.  And this summer,  peachy neons, beachy corals, sherbet shades and all varieties of melon seem to be the new pink.

HEALTH & BEAUTY: A Common Question About Sunscreen…

Summer is here! And, a question we’re often asked is…”What’s the best sunscreen to use?”

We tend to think of using sunscreen more during the Summertime since the sun is stronger and the days are hotter. Yet, it’s important to wear sunscreen on sunny, cloudy and cold-weather days to protect your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays year-round.

It’s best to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays that can damage your skin, cause premature aging and could lead to skin cancer. The majority of skin cancer cases occur on areas of the body that are most exposed to the sun such as the face, hands, ears and neck, so be extra diligent when applying sunscreen to those areas. If you frequently forget to apply sunscreen, try using a daily all-over-body moisturizer that already includes an SPF (sun protection factor).

Look for products that have an SPF of 30 or higher and that include titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, a powdered mineral that provides more natural protection. And, look for products that are free of artificial chemicals such as homosalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, petrochemicals, PABA, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances.

In addition to using the proper sunscreen, there are several things you can do to further protect your skin.

1) Keep covered. Clothing can offer a moderate amount of protection from UV rays. Wear cotton and breathable material to keep cool and to get some protection. Or, wear clothing with sun protection technology already built in.

2) Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face and eyes from damaging rays.

3) Stay indoors between the hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm when the rays are strongest.

4) Seek shade. Umbrellas and natural shade can also offer moderate protection.

Remember…your skin is your largest bodily organ, so protect it and be kind to it this Summer and all year round!

MEET the ARTISAN: Featuring Mezze Designs + GIVEAWAY

"MEET the ARTISAN" is a blog series that spotlights Etsy New York Team artisans and their craft. In this feature, we learn more about Rachael, the creator of Mezze Designs

Q: What is Mezze Designs? Can you briefly describe your business for us?

A: Mezze jewelry is handcrafted from gold, silver and mixed metals. I create pieces in limited quantities to preserve the exclusivity of each design. My studio is in an area of Brooklyn that is undergoing rapid change; it is an influential hub for indie rock and has a thriving local art community, which provides endless inspiration. The beauty of handcrafted jewelry lies in fact that each piece is inherently unique. My style is raw and organic and as such, some pieces have been left with a purposefully unfinished appearance. Whenever possible, I use recycled metals as well as ethically sourced stones.

In Arabic, mezze refers to an assortment of small appetizers. For me, it refers to something that stimulates a desire for more. Mezze \'me-'zei\ to relish, take pleasure in; enjoy

Q: Some artisans develop their products to meet consumer needs, while others craft products based on things and/or experiences that inspire them. What is the inspiration behind your business?

A: Mezze jewelry is designed to create tangible vestiges of memories, extrapolating them for the wearer to form and discover those of their own yet to come. I am an avid traveler and the places I’ve been and people who have touched my life have influenced many of my designs. Most pieces have a very personal meaning to me and I make an effort to share some of those stories in the product descriptions; they are physical reminders that evoke memories I will always cherish. I love all that is simple and elegant, but every now and then I get a little mischievous and will make something edgy or whimsical.

Q: Oftentimes, each artisan has a different strategy and objective for their business. What are the next steps for you and your business?

AI started Mezze as a hobby and as a creative outlet from my corporate career in the pharmaceutical industry. Since moving to New York, I have had the time to shift that focus with the intent to make it a sustainable business.  I am in the very early stages of the process, so my current goal is to increase my market presence both online and in boutique stores. Part of my strategy has been to get involved with the Etsy NY team and use this network to build and maintain relationships with other artisans who have turned their art into successful businesses.

Q: As many artisans look to grow and further develop their businesses, do you have some advice that you can share with fellow artisans?

A: Don’t be afraid to take risks. I am always experimenting with ideas, taking classes and asking for input on designs. Not everyone will like everything that you make and that is ok. Some things will work, others won’t and that is all a part of the learning process. Your style and ability will change along the way, which means you are evolving. There is a niche for everything out there, so keep working until you find the one that fits you and your product.

World Cup 2014

719px-WC-2014-Brasil.svg.png

The world has arrived in Brasil and it seems that everyone is watching the 2014 World Cup. According to a study by Adobe, the 2014 games will surpass the Olympics and the Superbowl in social media mentions.  Admittedly, the United States as a whole may be a late bloomer when it comes to the football fanaticism that is found in the rest of the world, but the momentum here is in full swing.  In my neighborhood alone, I've counted no less than 10 spots in a 3 block radius where you can watch the games. As someone who has never really been into sports, I find the World Cup to be an exciting introduction to something that is an obsession for the rest of the world. It stirs a common thread of passion and camaraderie among fans. No matter where you are in the world, you are guaranteed to find someone with whom you connect with if you simply bring up the subject of football.

Perhaps the US has too many competing sports for football to hold the same level of infatuation as American football or baseball, but my prediction is that change is coming. A huge number of children in the US play football recreationally and as the MLS matures in age (it's only been around since 1996) and big name stars such as David Beckham and Thierry Henry continue to bring a spotlight to the sport, my belief is that the fans will continue to come. ESPN and Fox Soccer broadcast more games now than ever, making world class matches and teams easily accessible to the US market.

So if this is your first introduction to the game or if you are a hard-core fan, as the games continue over the next few week, try to remember why the World Cup is so exciting. It's because of the passion, the variety of footballing styles and the athleticism of the players. And more than any other sporting event in the world, it connects the whole world. Similarly, that's what Etsy does - it is a platform that connects us to our passions, across a variety of different styles, substances and continents.

Viva futbol! Next stop Russia...
