Meet the Member: Andrea Turini

by Jennifer Velasquez

It was on a trip to Montana in 1991 that team member Andrea Turini was first inspired to make jewelry. She spent time exploring different techniques but after purchasing a few hanks of seed beads, she fell in love with beadweaving. Today she shares her passion with others through Andrea Turini Jewelry. Read more about her work below.

NYHC: Tell us about what you make.

Andrea Turini: I make classically elegant beaded statement jewelry using various techniques, although my favorite is beadweaving.

NYHC: Where do you live?

AT: In the Upper East Side in New York City with my husband and cat.

NYHC: What is unique or different about your process and/or designs?

AT: My creations have the body in mind. I strive to make jewelry that is comfortable and wears well because if it's not, you won't want to wear it! I balance bold colors with unique contrasts to create pieces that are not restricted by fads but are still stylish in design.

NYHC: Do you have any favorite pieces? What makes them special to you?

AT: I'm not sure I do! Because each piece I make can take anywhere from 2 - 20 hours, I put a lot of love and creative energy into each piece. My favorite pieces are the ones my customers enjoy wearing for many years.

NYHC: What is your favorite tool or supply?

AT: I love using Swarovski crystals and pearls because they bring depth and character to pieces. Not only do they add sparkle and shine, but they also add a timelessness to each piece.

NYHC: Is there a new piece/opportunity/change that you're excited about?

AT: I've been using natural gemstones to make larger statement necklaces, stacking crystal beaded elements and movable embellishments. They're great for Zoom meetings!

NYHC: Share an important lesson you've learned from running your business.

AT: Focus on becoming really good at the foundations. It can be overwhelming to start an Etsy shop and expand into all the various social media platforms, so choose what you can do (because it's hard to do it all) and become really good at what you choose.
