The {NewNew} In April - wrap up

The {NewNew} York Street Team has been very busy this spring combining their resources to promote Earthday, sell together at the new Brooklyn Flea market, donate team gift baskets to two local schools and meet up on April 14 for the team's first ever Team SWAP.

The {NewNew} live and in person!
Kristen of Cakehouse has done a fantastic job of leading the team's Brooklyn Flea efforts. Coordinating tables and tents for the 14 or so vendors that will be rotating participation throughout the month of April. Despite freezing cold weather the first Brooklyn Flea group sold on April 6, with more participants rotating in and out on April 13, 20 and 27. The Brooklyn Flea is located in Fort Green Brooklyn at 176 Lafayette Ave. Rotating shops include: cakehouse, Citybiz, DewOnAPetalHome, Dripstick, EmilyEJewelry, Fubabee, JTSTitches, KarensMonsters , Kimmchi, MetalSugar, MiraArtz, MTLopez9, NordeaSoaperie, Vyphuisdesigns, and wabisabi brooklyn.

Besides the shared table at the Flea, the team had a shared table with Etsy at the inaugural BUST Spring Fling Craftacular where Kimm of KimmChi and Josh of Dripstick manned a table full of Team and Etsy goodies, some giveaways and an eclectic mix of handmade merchandise - necklaces, tee shirts, tote bags, wristlets, art and jewelry.

Ania of Honorata and Danielle of CollectiveElements did the first ever Handmade Faire in Waretown, New Jersey on April 20th.

The generous Joanne of JoanneTracyDesigns kindly opened up her house to the April team meeting which was designated a supply, clothes and merchandise SWAP. It fit right in with the theme of recycling and conserving for Earthday with members bringing everything from ribbon to wine bottles [empty of course *wink*]. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joannetracy/

The {NewNew} loves the Earth

To promote Earthday and Green living in general the team filled their blog during the entire month of April with various tutorials, tips, and products that emphasized green living and materials. YoursTrulyxoxo, BeadScarf and Cakehouse featured their product's green appeal and KimmChi, BrooklynSoul, Hamsa Custom Crafts , MTLopez9, PulpSushi and Cakehouse gave us tutorials on re-using materials like junk mail, scrap fabrics or aluminum cans and transforming them into something new and totally usable. And NordeaSoaperie, WabisabiBrooklyn and Cakehouse all gave us great natural solutions for kitchen and personal cleansers.

The {NewNew} hearts Schools
Kristen of Cakehouse, Kimm of Kimmchi, Wai Sze of WaiSze, Iris of ArtByIris, MaryAnne of wabisabi brooklyn, Ania of Honorata, Karen of KarensMonsters all joined together to create a donation basket of their products that was included in as silent auction to benefit Hannah Senesh Community Day School.

The {NewNew} in the Press
Craftzine picked up Kimm of KimmChi's tutorial on paper making that highlighted the group's Earthday promotion on re-using materials on April 3.

10 Days later, they picked up Angie of BrooklynSoul's craft tutorial on turning aluminum cans into elegant jewelry.

9 Days after that they featured wabisabi brooklyn's tips on using making green cleaning agents.

And then 3 days after THAT they picked up PulpSushi's great tutorial on re-using old magazines and bottle caps to make magnets.

Kristen of Cakehouse was featured on DesignSponge which made me realize that DesignSponge, like Kristen, does not use capitals.

wabisabi brooklyn was mentioned in a Brooklyn Flea review by Only The Blog Knows Brooklyn on April 28.

Kristen of Cakehouse was reviewed on Docce.

And Lisa of of Fubabee's notecard's were listed under Mother's Day Gifts in the Chicago Tribune.

-----------------------
Beth Shorr of bshorr has volunteered to learn the ins and outs of code copying and keep up our myspace presence.

MaryAnne of wabisabi brooklyn has volunteered to be a blog admin, doing general maintenance, adding tags as well as helping to organize blog promotions.

Marilyn of PulpSushi will be helping out with web graphics to advertise the group and promotions, like our great "We Ship Internationally" badge.

Stephanie of Bungaloe has offered to help with any hand drawn graphics as well as the mailing out of press releases.

And Jen of JTStitches has assumed more new member responsibilities; checking the team email as well as sorting their Etsy Minis into the appropriate categories.

-----------------------

For May, look for the {NewNew} at the new May Brooklyn Homeshow on May 17 at 170 Tillary Street, Suite 706 as well as Sundays throughout may at the Fort Green Brooklyn Flea. As well as at the Hoboken Art and Music Festival on May 4 and Spring Crafts at Lyndhurston May 2, 3 and 4 and the Village Crafts and Small Artwork Fair on May 17 . May 16 and 17 mark this summer's Etsy Weekend at Williamsburg's Artist's and Fleas, so check us out there as well. Check back for our month-long wedding promotion with lots of tips, tricks and personal stories, as well as our match up the the California Crafters of Etsy for a nice little mash up.

Street Team at the Summer Fairs

With all of the summer fairs coming up: the Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, the BUST Spring Fling Craftacular at the Warsaw in Greenpoint, Renegade in Williamsburg, and everything else in between, our {NewNew} Team members that hope to be vendors at these events came together to work on some signage for the team to use at the events and hang in our booth.

Cakehouse was lovely to host as Beadscarf, DewOnAPetal, Dripstick, EmilyEJewelry, Fubabee, HamsaCustomCrafts, Honorata, JTStitches, KimmChi, Metalsugar, MiraArtz, Mtlopez9, and NordeaSoaperie came together with sewing machines, fabric scraps and fusible web to make their Team Banner.

Everyone, cut, sewed, ironed or placed the banner together to create this fantastic striking piece - a lovely blue patchwork with decorative appliques with the New York City Skyline rising above in a bold black. Can you believe Martin hand painted those perfect letters!

Purty Bird - I started making paper-mache birds (what PurtyBird was about originally) back in grad school when I wanted to give my mother a cute ceramic pig that I had seen in a gift shop window (she collects pigs) but didn't have the money. I decided to try making her a rough equivalent for Christmas. I chose to work in paper-mache because it was accessible---as a grad student I had an abundance of paper to work with, and the rest of the ingredients were cheap, even to me! In the process of realizing my vision I created a veritable barnyard of pigs and other potential animals. One of the non-pig-like body forms resembled a bird. I impulsively gave it a beak. Encouraged by the result, I added wings and a tail. I painted it as I had my mother's Christmas pig, covered in flowers. The result made me laugh so I made another, and another, and another, giving the more successful ones away as gifts. Everyone who got one said I should sell them somewhere. Being up to my neck in dissertation research at the time, I couldn't explore the possibility.

Alton Weekes - Alton Weekes is a lifestyle design studio that specializes in hand-crafted stationery products(greeting cards, invitations, announcements, notes and all things paper). Our products are carried by specialty shops and museum gift stores.

Aperture Agog - Even after 9 years in NYC it is a city I'm excited to wake up in every day. I photograph small moments of life in NYC that I love to share with you. All photographs are printed on premium quality, acid free, archival paper. I hope the moments I grab the world are ones you enjoy too.

Bluestitch Books - I have been making books for over ten years. I love typography. If i can can make a book that somehow incorporates type, I am a happy girl. I started printing notecards inspired by vintage appliances and patterns.

In Stitches - "In Stitches" was born literally overnight, after visiting a craft fair. I always enjoyed collage work and combining it with stitching was actually quite spontaneous. I consider my cards small pieces of art. Each and every one of them starts with nothing particular in mind and ends up taking a witty personality if its own. Even though these pieces are designed as postcards and bookmarks, their actual use is left up to its owner. They can be gifted, given as valentines or greeting cards to that special someone, collected and framed individually or as part of a series.

Designs by Aliza - love to make beautiful things. Especially out of paper. I create scrapbooks to tell life stories, record memories, and just to hold on to the sensory experience of photographs on paper. I also create note cards, with custom cards available by request. I am constantly looking how to enhance more everyday items with paper and glue.

Fisk & Fern - I'm Laura Fisk and am an illustrator and printmaker working in brooklyn, ny who got the printing bug early working at a stamp store in high school. The first time I carved a stamp I was hooked on the idea of taking an image from my head and being able to print it on almost anything. Piles of carved stamps spun into exploring every type of printmaking I could, and am still exploring. The bright colors in screenprinting allow me to bring my weird little creatures and monsters to life.

Gramkin Paper Studio - Gramkin Paper Studio is the place for modern personalized stationery and invitations. That includes our popular GLIB GREETINGS and COURTESY CARD line of paper goods

Little Bunny - I have been making books for over ten years. I love typography. If i can can make a book that somehow incorporates type, I am a happy girl. I started printing notecards inspired by vintage appliances and patterns.

PriaVanda - Using satin ribbons and a unique technique to basket weave her handcrafted products, designer PriaVanda has found the perfect medium to create the structures for her line.

“I began weaving ribbons through plain bamboo mats to dress them up and was suddenly inspired to add this touch to everyday items. I was drawn to stationery because I cannot live without my day planner and that was the first product I created. The line grew from there’, notes PriaVanda.

hellomello handspun - I am a mixed-media artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Hopelessly obsessed with all things fiber, textile, vintage and kitsch, the only thing keeping my many collections from growing out of control is the lack of space in my tiny NYC apartment. Almost any night of the week you’ll find me curled up with my kittens and a pile of test knitting or spinning my way into the wee hours of the morning in my over-crowded living room. Well, it’s cozy to us anyway....

LAI GRAI - under the banner of FIBER ART, i can: spin, dye, card batts, knit, crochet, weave, embroider, felt, sew and experiment with every range in between.

with LAI GRAI you can find fiber art to suit your every desire- from wearables to materials- each crafted as functional art.

Wai Sze Designs

Hi! My name is Wai Sze and I'm a new member to the group. I'm so excited to be here! Growing up, I've always been into crafts - be it knitting, cross-stitch, paper, polymer clay and even jewelry. At the current stage of my life, I can say that I'm finally focused and right now I'm all about scrapbook paper and everything I can do with it! I make greeting cards, altered tin favors, scrapbooks & gift tags! My etsy shop has given me a renewed sense of how great life can be once you've realized what your passion is. To all those that have been struggling to do something, either big or small, find your passion and focus on what makes you happy. That's really all that matters!

Here's a few of my recent work that I am very proud of.

A wedding scrapbook done for a client as a gift. The theme: pink and each page included the pre-planning and stages of the brides wedding.

I dated my boyfriend for 8+years and finally got married last September. These wedding favors epitomized all the DIY work I did for our big day. Now I offer these to other brides for their weddings.

Gift tags are so fun and you can use it for anything. I really love how these turned out and by far one of my favorite in my collection of tags!

Hope you've learned a bit about me. Again, I'm thrilled to be a part of New New and hope to be an integral part of the team.

All the best, Wai Sze

The {NewNew} Children's Shops

For more Accessories from the Metro New York area - search: newnewteam, children on Etsy

HeartFelt 4 Kids - When my son was born, my mother gave to me some lovely felt booties of mine which she had saved for my children. Felt was popular back then, she said, and I was taken by its design versatility and, most definitely, its nostalgic quality. Ever since, I had wanted to make children's felt clothing of an heirloom quality that would be treasured enough to be passed from one generation to the next, as was my experience and inspiration.

Muppetloon - Felt It items are made from Eco-Felt Fabric. This felt fabric is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles! Another score for the planet!

Overall Baby - I wanted to reinvent the overall. From your basic and boring denim overall to something fun and cute. Our overalls are offered in a variety of fabrics and prints. They are super durable (all seams are double stitched) and can easily be grown into (since the straps can be adjusted) making them a very economical purchase. They are the perfect playtime wear. Practical and fashionable!

Playground Rockstar - Mission: to make the COOLEST kids shine even brighter... with the FRESHEST tees! It's always time to shine!

Studio Rouge - With a love of the nostalgic, a feel for the past, and a vast collection of mid-century vintage textiles, buttons and trims to inspire, I've created a line of baby quilts, pillows, bibs, infant wear, dolls and puppets. Many are fashioned from vintage items found at antique fairs and flea markets.

Windows Of Agate - One of Karina's first creative memories was making large necklace beads out of newspaper, glue, and paint at age four. She received her first sewing machine on her seventh birthday, and over twenty years later she still finds that fabric and craft stores are her favorite places to spend a rainy afternoon. Karina is mother to an awesome, sweet little girl, and finds much of her inspiration from her daughter's various antics and mischief.
